A remake of the original Assassin’s Creed was in the works as of 2023, leaker claims, also alleging Hexe will no longer feature a catssassin

Update to the update:Responding to Insider Gaming’s report claiming around 50 Assassin’s Creed Hexe devs have been moved to an interproject team, Ubisoft have issued the following statement to RPS:

“Mobility across teams is a standard part of how we operate. As project priorities change, team members may transition from one project to another where their expertise is needed, helping us stay flexible and responsive as work evolves.”

Update: A report from Insider Gaming has seconded j0nathan’s claim about Assassin’s Creed Hexe ditching a cat, alleging that the game will instead take more grounded and scientific approach to depicting witchcraft.

Insider Gaming’s report also claims that Ubisoft leadership opted to move approximately 50 Hexe developers off the project last week, with these devs being transferred to an interproject team that’s home to folks not assigned to a specific game. The report claims that staff on this interproject team “are required to secure a project at Ubisoft within a three-month period, or they could face redundancy”.

Insider Gaming also assert that Hexe is currently planned to release in June 2027, but could potentially slip to later in that year.

I’ve reached out to Ubisoft for comment.

Original story follows:

A remake of the first Assassin’s Creed game was in the works at Ubisoft as of a few years ago, a prominent AC leaker has claimed, while also alleging that the decision’s recently been taken to ditch some of Assassin’s Creed Hexe’s more “magical” elements.

This chatter comes on the heels of Ubisoft finally revealing the much-leaked Black Flag Resynced last week and the news that former Hexe game director Benoit Richer has left the publisher.

The source of this leak’s an AssCreed YouTuber who goes by j0nathan – they’ve previously prophesied the likes of AC Valhalla’s third DLC being called Dawn of Ragnarök and being set in Svartalfheim. Following Black Flag Resynced’s reveal, they’ve claimed that back in 2023 they were told a remake of the original Assassin’s Creed depicting Altair’s third crusade parkour was in the works.

Naturally, that leaves open the question of whether this alleged remake’s still in development as of right now, especially given Ubisoft’s wave of cancellations and delays earlier this year. That said, Ubisoft did make clear that remakes of older stabby robe-wearer games were a key part of their future plans as of 2024.

Not done with posting, j0nathan also claimed that Hexe’s gone through changes since original AC Black Flag creative director Jean Guesdon was promoted to head of content on the series as part of a leadership shakeup earlier this year. The leaker alleges Guesdon’s opted to ditch “magical” elements of Hexe, such as the player taking control of a cat. Running around on four paws doesn’t seem too much different from having bird-inspired x-ray vision to my mind, but slimming down the scope of an AC game to focus more heavily on the established loop of jumping about and stabbing people as a human would loosely mirror the approach the publishers have taken to Black Flag Resynced.

As of writing, Hexe remains release dateless, though unlike the alleged AC1 remake, Ubisoft have at least confirmed it exists.
