Marathon season 2 launch plagued by anteaters, monkeys and weasels, with Bungie dishing out free gear to say sorry for the server issues

Watch out! An unruly gang of animals have been accosting Marathon right as its season 2 update has gone live! Developers Bungie have been hard at work getting the creatures under control, and have promised to dish out some free gear to affected players as a make good.

Bungie had to temporarily take the extraction shooter offline yesterday in order to issue a patch designed to tackle the wave of “elevated Anteater, Monkey, and Weasel errors” players were getting as Marathon‘s servers struggled to handle the load. The short version of what was a multi-hour saga is that getting in to try out the game’s new additions proved tough for a lot of folks.

Thankfully, as of about 4AM UK time this morning on June 3rd, Marathon’s servers are back online. “Thank you for your patience while we completed maintenance and issued the patch,” the Marathon team wrote in their social post announcing this. “If you continue to encounter Anteater, Monkey, or Weasel errors, please restart your game and try again. We know today’s disrupted runs, contracts, and time you planned to spend in Marathon. To help make up for that disruption, we’ll be sending anyone who played during the affected times (June 2nd, 10AM PT to 4PM PT) 7 sponsored kits to your in-game mailbox, split into two messages.”

The kits in question are the Superior CyberAcme Kit, Deluxe NuCal Kit, Deluxe MIDA Kit, Deluxe Traxus Kit, Deluxe Arachne Kit, Deluxe Sekiguchi Kit, and Deluxe UESC Kit.

It’s a far from ideal start to an opportunity for the shooter, which has gone free for a week, to jump-start itself by convincing new and returning faces to pop in and try the likes of the new “PvP-lite” Sponsored Survival mode. Hopefully with these animal-themed teething issues sorted early doors, the rest of season 2 can run smoothly and give Bungie something positive in dark times for the studio.
