Epic Games have made no secret of the next release of Unreal Engine; they first shared some details about the follow-up back in 2024, namely that it’s being built around the idea of “interoperable content” that can be switched between any game that uses the engine. Now, Unreal Engine 6 has been somewhat formally revealed through the lens of a “new era” of Rocket League during the game’s Paris Majors semi-finals.
The teaser trailer, which you can see below, quite quickly clarifies that everything you see is “captured real-time in game.” To its credit, it does look like a cinematic trailer as opposed to a gameplay one, though to me that’s not personally better. Sure, the cars are shiner, yeah, that fancy hazy lighting looks realistic or whatever, I’m just not so sure that that’s what drives me (pun intended) to Rocket League. Still, as it currently stands the beautiful racing game is actually being made on Unreal Engine 3, so there might at least be some behind the scenes upgrades that will make life easier for developer Psyonix.
Overall the teaser really is mostly just a “look how pretty Rocket League looks now thanks to Unreal Engine 6,” there’s no details as to when this visual revamp might come to the game, or when the game engine will be available for public use. Unreal Engine 5 did only release in 2022, so it’s not that old in the greater scheme of things, meaning we can probably expect to wait a little while yet.
There are a couple of other things worth noting. For one, at one point in the trailer there’s a big ole overview of the various Epic-made games like Fortnite and Lego Fortnite, but the bigger thing is the glaringly obvious Disney castle. No real surprise there because Epic have said that their Disney mega metaverse game is essentially the testing grounds for their Unreal Engine 6 ideas, but still possibly an actual first look at it. Prominent Fortnite leaker Hypex also claims that the overview bit in the trailer is a tease for all these games being accessible as part of one universal hub, though you should always take things like this with a healthy pinch of salt.
