Game Infarcer: Nintendo and NVIDIA partner for headache-inducing 3DLSS 5

Last month, NVIDIA revealed DLSS 5, a controversial new feature that alters game visuals with AI technology. Frustrated by another company’s attempt to move in on its signature “technology that makes your eyes hurt,” today Nintendo announced its plans to partner with NVIDIA to make its own version of the technology. Inspired by its popular 3DS handheld, this new technology is called 3DLSS 5, and allows any game to be playable with stereoscopic 3D.

“Here at Nintendo, we love to make people nauseous,” a dubbed English voiceover of Yoshiaki Koizumi states in a recent video. “We pioneered game-induced sickness with the Virtual Boy, then perfected it with the Nintendo 3DS system. Now, we’re taking things one step further.” At this point in the video, Koizumi dramatically takes a single step towards the camera. He has a stiff smile on his face, but it’s clear he thinks this wordplay is very funny.

Then, he grabs a Switch 2 from a nearby shelf, which has two images of Grace Ashcroft, the protagonist from Resident Evil Requiem. On the left, her face is normal. On the right, her face is… 3D? Maybe? Let me adjust my monitor real quick. Okay, yeah, I kinda see it. Wait, he just moved it. Let me pause again and… okay, now I see it. I kind of have to squint, but it totally works. Let me just unpause, and… okay, wait, let me adjust again.

The feature is exclusive to the “Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack New 3DLSS 5 Add-On Ultimate” subscription, which costs $200 per year, “because of tariffs.” So far, the online response has been positive.

“This is the best thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I’ll never not use this,” wrote one YouTube commenter, long before the feature was even released.

“Nintendo is number one for a reason,” a Nintendo-focused influencer wrote on X. “I’ve never had a headache that feels like this before. That’s innovation.”

“I’ve seen a lot of people experimenting with 3DLSS 5, and I’ve got to say – keep it up!” the CEO of Dramamine, a motion sickness medication, said in a TikTok video. “I especially love how immersed you all get in the 3DLSS 5 marathon challenge. See how long you can go without throwing up!”

“3DLSS 5 is absolutely AWESOME!” Jack Black said before doing a backflip during the press tour for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. When Game Infarcer asked whether Black got a chance to play it, he replied with an a capella air guitar solo. Much like the people who use 3DLSS 5, it was pretty freaking sick.

Some are less enthusiastic about the feature, but Nintendo has offered a solution. Starting next week, it will also roll out 2DLSS 5, which “allows users to access 3DLSS 5 content in 2D,” according to Koizumi. It will cost the same amount, but won’t do anything.
