Sculk shriekers are one of the new interesting blocks being added to Minecraft with The Wild Update. Parts of the ancient cities are infested with the death-corrupted sculk, and all variants of the blocks. Coupled with both the warden and the sculk sensor, these screaming blocks can spell disaster for players that stray too close without knowing how they work.

<p>Once a shrieker has finished its 4.5 second shriek, all players in the survival game mode within 40 blocks will be given the darkness debuff for 12 seconds. However, this is their secondary effect, which is mostly atmospheric in nature. Their real draw and reason for existing is different.</p>
<p>Each shrieker that a player activates will add one to a warning level that is specific to each player. Whenever that player hits four warning levels, a <a href=)
warden will attempt to spawn. Since the warning level is tied to the player, four different shriekers activated once will summon a warden just like one shrieker being activated four times.

If a warning is not generated for 10 minutes, the player’s current warning level will decrease by one. If the player manages to get out of the shriekers range after activating it, they will avoid both the darkness effect as well as summoning a warden. However, players should keep in mind that their warning level will still increase by one.
To give further details on their redstone potential, when a shrieker is fed a redstone signal, it will search for a player within their mentioned 16 block spherical range. If a player is detected, the shrieker will activate and if no players are detected, it will not activate.
