The new Minecraft launcher is now available to download and install following the release of snapshot 21w44a.
Mojang’s famous video game remains extremely popular and the good news is that its Java Edition has joined Xbox Game Pass for November. And this is a particularly good month for Microsoft loyalists as Forza Horizon 5 and GTA San Andreas Remastered are also joining the subscription service’s library.
While Xbox Game Pass users can now get the Java Edition for free, players on PC can now install an update.

How to download the new Minecraft launcher
You can only download the new Minecraft launcher on Windows 10 beyond the May 2019 update or Windows 11.
It’s completely free and is available to get from the Microsoft store. All it does is allow you to launch the base game, Java Edition, and Dungeons from the same place.
There are a few caveats that you should know about, though. Story Mode will not be available through the launcher as it’s no longer supported, and the Education Edition is its own thing that needs to be downloaded.
How to install new Minecraft launcher
Mojang says that you need to install the new Minecraft launcher on your C: Drive.
You do not need to delete or uninstall the old version for this newer one. If you already have the older one available, you can simply update through prompt or by proceeding to settings.
When unsure if you have the Unified or new Windows version, you can check by opening settings and selecting About. Check out Mojang’s official FAQ for more information.
Snapshot 21w44a
You can now download Snapshot 21w44a for the Java Edition.
All you need to do is open the game’s launcher and ensure Snapshots are enabled in the Installations tab. As for what’s new, Mojang has listed the following:
- New world generation is now inserted under existing chunks when upgrading a world to the new world height
- Added an Online options screen where you can now find the Realms Notifications option and Difficulty when on a server
- Added an “Allow Server Listings” option to opt-out of having your name displayed in server listings
There’s also the following changes:
- Sleeping now only resets the weather cycle if it was raining
- Blocks and fluids are now also affected by simulation distance. It might be a good idea to test that the behavior of your redstone contraptions remained the same
