Every day this season, our team will share who we believe has the best chance to leave the yard. We’re calling it the “Dinger of the Day”. From one-off plays to core parts of daily stacks, we hope this fun article will help you build winning lineups along the way.
Today’s Picks
James: Trea Turner – “Drew Smyly has allowed four home runs over his last 11 innings pitched and 13 in 42 innings pitched on the year. Smyly is currently allowing a 33% flyball rate on batted balls and sits in the bottom 10% of the league in Barrel% and HardHit%. Turner is currently slugging lefties at a .690 clip and has 17 hits in just 42 at-bats on the year against LHP. I love playing against Smyly’s 2.96 HR/9 here and while lefty bats have tagged Smyly pretty well on the year, I still lean towards the splits advantage here with Turner. Turner has hit eight of his ten home runs on the fastball this year and Smyly is throwing his 4-seamer 57% of the time.”
Zach: C.J. Cron – “Picking a hitter at Coors Field seems like a cheap way out but I cannot help myself when it comes to Cron as Jordan Lyles is really bad. Lyles has allowed 11 home runs in his 11 starts. Nine of those home runs have come against right-handed hitting and Lyles is allowing righties to slug .554 this season. While Cron is a better hitter against left-handed pitching he should be hitting in the middle of the Rockies lineup and has some nice Statcast numbers such as an average exit velocity of 89.8 miles-per-hour and a 10.5% barrel rate. Both of those numbers would rank in the top 60 in the majors this season.”
Jared: Ryan Zimmerman – “I don’t entirely love this one, but I do see it as a good situation to pick on with a hitter that’s been crushing the ball vs LHP this year. Zimmerman’s sporting a .927 OPS and 151 wRC+ against left-handed pitching in 2021, albeit with just one long ball against them but surrounding stats the speak to his strength in the split. Drew Smyly’s susceptible to the long ball in a big way, and as a fly ball oriented pitcher who struggles vs RHBs as well, there’s a lot to be optimistic about in this matchup as far as HR potential goes.”
