March is not just the third month of the year, it also happens to be Women’s History Month. In celebration of that, the ever-popular Minecraft from Mojang Studios, or more specifically, the Minecraft Education Edition, has released a new set of lessons in conjunction with Women’s History Month. The game will shine the spotlight on two notable female figures in history. The leaders in question are early 20th-century activist Emmeline Pankhurst, as well as Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai.
These lessons will send players on trip alongside US Congressman and civil rights leader, John Lewis. The entire experience will take place in a series called Good Trouble.
Pankhurst helped found the Women’s Social and Political Union in Britain, with both being key forces in winning women the right to vote. In Minecraft’s celebration of Women’s History Month, her Women’s Suffrage lesson takes players back to the period where women were basically excluded from the political process and change needed to happen. You will need to help Pankhurst spread the word to eight other women that the time to vote is now.
Teach and play
As for Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel laureate in history, her background was an education activist in Pakistan. For Women’s History Month, Minecraft will feature her lesson, One Girl Among Many.
One Girl Among Many will explore the context of her struggle for education in her country, and why equity in education is needed for a fair and just society. Players will help build a school for the local girls in the lesson.
The Good Trouble world is available as a login-free demo across platforms from now until the end of March. Players can also access the world via the Minecraft Marketplace via the Bedrock edition.
Microsoft will also hold a free webinar on March 18 at 12 PM ET. At the session, the company will talk more about the lessons and the topic of girls’ access to education. You can register for that webinar here.
