You can barely see him off in the distance, but he’s there. Galactus appeared in the skies over the Fortnite, menacing the island somewhere off the Northeast coast: you can see him there, fist outstretched, if you go near Coral Castle and look towards the sea. I don’t know what exactly he has planned, but it can’t be good. His coming heralds the beginning of the live event here in Season 4, and it seems a perfectly portentous omen here on November 3, 2020.
“Nexus War” is the name of this season, and it seems to refer to this upcoming massive clash between the heroes that have been gradually dropping on this island and the armies of Galactus. That will mean a live event, which we’ve already seen evidence of in files. This season has already been one of the most lavish we’ve seen in the game yet—the arrival of Stark Industries was a whole thing—and I’ve got to assume that will extend to a massive live event on a scale we’ve never seen before. Such superlatives always have a place in Fortnite, because Epic has largely just been upping the ante for three years now.
One thing that seems worth mentioning: Galactus arriving in this way seems, to me, like a clear attempt to rhyme with the meteor that appeared way back in Chapter 1, Season 3. Back then we had no idea how Epic planned to shape and change the island, and so when it appeared as a twinkle in the sky nobody had any idea that it was even possible that it come down and change the map in the process. Those were exciting times, when the game was still taking shape and when none of these longstanding traditions had yet been established.
Now, of course, we have a good idea of what’s going to happen: Galactus will come and things will get nutty. My main question is whether we’ll have just a live event, or whether we’ll have a big limited time mode akin to the Thanos mode from Avengers: Endgame, where we can don our superhero powers and fight back against the armies of Galactus. My guess is yes.
