It’s May 4, once a time to ponder anti-imperialism, but now a time to to celebrate the Star Wars franchise, which is I suppose also fairly anti-imperialist as a whole. . May the Fourth has gotten a real boost in recent years due to Disney’s general licensing enthusiasm, and you’ll see few more involved partnerships than the one with Fortnite, which features a range of Star Wars cosmetics and even, for some reason, contained a crucial plot point for Rise of Skywalker. It also contains the series’ most iconic weapons, so if you find yourself sliced up by a glowing shaft of light in today, you might be wondering how to get a lightsaber.

The first time lightsabers showed up in the game, they were available only through special lightsaber chests that threw a few out for you to choose from. Those look like this:

This time, however, they’re also available as standard floor and chest loot, so you don’t need to go out looking for them specifically. They also seem to be common enough, despite being gold-level rarity: I found three in a relatively relaxed looting session this morning. I prefer to roll with Mace Windu’s weapon, giving my face a pleasant purple glow to it. Kylo Ren’s has a slightly more aggressive crackle to it as well, which can be satisfying to run around with.

Once you get one, you’ll find yourself with a potent weapon. Lightsabers proved themselves formidable but not entirely unbalanced last time around, a little like a refinement of the Infinity Blade debacle from way back in the day. I got sliced apart by a random player my first time out, but I’m still hoping I’m able to take somebody down with one of these things.

Lightsabers will be around until tomorrow, May 5, so move quickly if you want to mess around with one. They’ll likely come back at some point later, but who knows: the entire international cinematic schedule has been thrown for something of a loop recently, so cross-promotion has become, you might say, a bit complicated.
