Xbox Gameplay Chart: Fortnite Drops to Third Place for the First Time in a Year – TrueAchievements

This week’s Xbox Gameplay Chart shows Call of Duty: Modern Warfare still at no. 1. The fact that Fortnite hasn’t yet reclaimed the top spot is surprising enough, but it’s now been supplanted out of the second spot, and is at no. 3 for the first time since we started the chart early last year. In its place at no. 2 is GTA V, which is enjoying another surge in popularity after being added to Xbox Game Pass ten days ago. Rounding out the top five are Minecraft, which is never far from the top, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege.

Here is the top 40 Xbox Gameplay Chart for the week ending 12 January 2020.

Apex Legends is back up at no. 6. Its holiday-themed Holo-Day Bash ended last week, but tomorrow signals the start of its Grand Soiree Arcade Event, where there’ll be a new mode every two days for two weeks. It’s possible that Apex Legends, which has been swapping places with Rocket League and bouncing between sixth and seventh place for the last few weeks, will move further up the ranks as a result of its Soiree Arcade Event. Forza Horizon 4 and Destiny 2 have managed to hold their places at no. 10 and no. 11, but there’s a lot of upheaval either side of them, with titles switching places and rising or falling in the chart. Star Wars Battlefront II, NBA 2K20, and Overwatch: Origins Edition have all moved up by one place. Halo MCC, however, has taken a bit of a hit, dropping from no. 12 to no. 15. Red Dead 2 has also dropped two places, suggesting that the bonuses or clothing and role discounts which Rockstar dish out aren’t enough to keep players where they are. Red Dead Online is also suffering from a number of bugs, such as issues with spawning animals and loading screens, so perhaps some online players are taking a step back until these problems are fixed.

The Witcher 3 has halted its fall and remains at no. 20. The same can’t be said of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which has dropped by three places, and looks to be firmly on its way out of the chart. Borderlands 3 is also on its way down, having moved from no. 23 to no. 25. It had its first story DLC back in December, but it looks as though players might already be moving on to something else. SMITE, meanwhile, which last week had only ten places to fall before disappearing off the chart, has now had a pretty sizeable jump back up to no. 26. The game got a pretty hefty update just last week, with new God Skins and DLC, and it’s likely this which is responsible for the game’s jump. The title making its debut appearance on our chart this week is Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet, which just joined Xbox Game Pass last week. Arriving into Game Pass beside it was city-sim Frostpunk, which doesn’t seem to have made it onto the chart with Sword Art Online. We’d still recommend it, though. Call of Duty: Black Ops II has taken a tumble from no. 33 to no. 37, whilst Ghost Recon Breakpoint has fallen four places to no. 38. FIFA 19, meanwhile, which last week looked to be on the brink of falling off of the chart, has managed to heave itself up one space to no. 39, and has been replaced with Minecraft: Xbox One Edition.

Last week, it was Untitled Goose Game, Brawlhalla and NBA 2K19 which had fallen off the chart; this week, it’s just Styx: Shards of Darkness, previously at no. 32, which has now disappeared. The title had been added to Xbox Games with Gold at the beginning of January, and remains available to download until the 31st, so it’s unclear why it might have dropped off so suddenly. Perhaps its addition to Games with Gold initially prompted players to pick it up, who’ve now decided to move onto something else.

This week’s had a lot of shuffling and re-organising, all of which seems to be a ripple effect from Fortnite being knocked down one step. Modern Warfare remains firmly in top place, but how long do you think this will last? How soon will Fortnite be back at no. 1? Let us know in the comments!
