High Dollar

Sam Mayer – $9,300 – Starting 12th

We head to the 1-mile oval track in New Hampshire this weekend and unlike previous weekends with bad weather, we got full practice and qualifying this week. Josh Berry is on the pole, despite hitting the wall in his qualifying run – which actually is pretty impressive. A lot of high-dollar options start towards the top here with Gibbs starting 4th, Gragson 9th, Allgaier 3rd, Byron 10th, and Allmendinger 7th. Really, any of these names could take this top spot and Ty Gibbs turned in the fastest practice lap with William Byron third. For my favorite play of the group, however, I am moving outside the box this week and looking at Sam Mayer. Mayer qualified 12th but turned in the 6th fastest practice lap. Some of the recent fantasy performances by Mayer have been poor but we need to consider we are getting through a road course stretch of the schedule – something that Mayer has never really been great at. The 1-mile here plays into Mayer’s strengths as in 16 starts at tracks of 1-2 miles long, he has five top-five and seven top-ten finishes. In 17 races total on the year, Mayer has nine top-10 finishes and netted 41 fantasy points or more in a four-race stretch in the intermediate stretch of Dover, Darlington, Texas, and Charolette. This starting spot gives us some wiggle room to the front while keeping a nice floor. I think by getting creative we can roster one other guy above Mayer – with William Byron likely being the highest owned option this weekend.

Low Dollar

Patrick Emerling – $5,000 – Starting 28th

Patrick Emerling has only been a part of five races this year, but he has an average finish of 26th and average fantasy points of 23.9.  Emerling has been quoted saying this is one of his favorite tracks and he has found a ton of success in the Modified Tour over the last few years. Emerling is piloting the #35 which is usually led by Joey Gase and while he didn’t turn in a great practice time, the price on Emerling here is really bringing him onto my radar this week. With 200 laps and some dominator points to go around, targeting two high-dollar options is likely the strategy this week. Emerling needs to just hit his floor here of around 20 fantasy points to likely payoff what we need him to do here.

While I do concede the fact that I am not incredibly familiar with Emerling, sometimes the price is all we really need to see. If you want another risk option here, Joe Graf at $5,900 is someone I will also have in my pool as he turned in the sixth fastest qualifying time. The issue is speed or not, Graf has run into a lot of issues this year and has finishes of 30th or worse in four of his last five and only a 13.9 FPPG average this season. This week is one of those weeks that I have brought up before for Xfinity – the bottom tier of drivers just are not good. They run poor equipment, have poor averages, and have inconsistent historical data.
