Minecraft has a vast collection of animals which a player can tame and make their pets such as pigs, donkeys, rabbits and pandas. You can also find Llamas in the mix – and the wonderful news is you can tame these, too!
Players can find two Llamas traveling with Wandering Traders. You can also find them on their own in the mountain biomes, or savanna biomes, in groups of four to six. These Llamas will look different initially, as wild Llamas don’t have colorful rugs on their backs… but read on to find out how you can equip one!
Minecraft Llamas are neutral mobs that can be used to ride on, and even provide additional storage when you’re on the move. In order to ride a Llama, and equip it with additional storage, you need to tame it. If you want to know how to tame a Llama in Minecraft, then you’ve come to the right place!
What do Llamas eat?
Llamas, like most of Minecraft’s neutral and passive mobs, have a favorite food, and you may need this in order to tame your Llama, as well as keep its health high after taming. Llamas are one of the more unique mobs in that they will consume two types of food, Wheat and Hay Bales.
Hay Bales are made from three Wheat, so it’s worth knowing what these items do when fed to a Llama to know which is best.
According to the Minecraft Wiki, Wheat heals two health points, while a Hay Bale restores ten, making Hay Bales more efficient for health. Similarly, Hay Bales speed up growth from a child to adult considerably quicker than Wheat, and is also the only food that will activate Love Mode in tamed Llamas, so is required for breeding. On the other hand, for increasing Temper in Llamas – which we’ll get to shortly – Wheat is most efficient, increasing the temper value by three, compared to just 6 by Hay Bales.

How to tame a Minecraft Llama
Naturally, in order to tame a Llama, you must first locate one. While you can find Llamas with Wandering Traders, they are rare, and work slightly differently. In this part of the guide, we’ll tell you how to tame a wild Llama, but you can read about a Trader’s Llama further down.
Wild Llamas, as mentioned, can be found in groups of four in Savanna biomes, and groups of four to six in Windswept Hills. If you are struggling to locate a Llama, then you can use summon cheats or a spawn egg. The summon cheat for a llama is “/summon llama”, however, this can only be done with cheats turned on, and will prevent you earning Achievements/Advancements in your world.

While it’s not necessary to taming a Llama, you can speed up the taming process by feeding it. You will require either Wheat or Hay Bales in your inventory.
Place the food in the your main hand, and press the use button on the Llama. For taming purposes, you won’t see any particles when the Llama eats, but you will hear a sound, and the food will be taken from your inventory.

Unlike most mobs, which require feeding to tame, the Llama works in the same way as the Minecraft horse, in that you need to ride it to get it to trust you. With an empty hand, click the Use button on your device/console/PC to get on to the Llama’s back.
Depending on its temper level, it may keep bucking you off. Keep trying until you eventually see the Llama’s health display above your hotbar, demonstrating that it is now tamed. This is where feeding the Llama comes in, as the more you feed the Llama before climbing on its back, the better its temper value will be, and the less time it will take to tame it.

Once the llama is tamed, you can then ride it. Make sure there is nothing selected in your hotbar by selecting an empty slot.
The game control for mounting the llama will differ depending on the console you are using.
PC/Mac Java edition – right-click on the llama
Pocket edition (PE) – move pointer over the llama and press “mount”
Xbox – press LT
PS3/PS4 – L2
Nintendo – ZL
Windows 10 – right-click on the llama
Education edition – right-click on the llama
When you have mounted the llama, red hearts will appear if it has been tamed. This is called love mode.
If you haven’t fed the llama enough food, the llama will throw you off its back. If this happens, continue to attempt to mount the llama until hearts appear.
Fun fact: You can actually tame a llama purely by attempting to mount it without feeding it first. Just keep trying until hearts appear.
However, it takes less time to tame a llama if you feed it.
You can sit on the llama, however you can’t put a saddle on it and control its movement. It will take you wherever it pleases.
How to breed Llamas in Minecraft
As mentioned above, there are two things that Llamas like to eat, Hay Bales and Wheat. However, you can only encourage Llamas to breed with Hay Bales.
Just like breeding other Minecraft mobs, in order to breed a Llama, all you need to do is take a Hay Bale in your main hand, and click on the Llama with it. If successful, you should see love hearts above the Llamas head. Feed another nearby, and the two will cause a third, baby Llama to spawn.
There will then be a cool down before you can put a Llama into Love Mode again.
You can also then feed Wheat or Hay Bales to the baby Llama to encourage it to grow faster. Without, a baby Llama will take approximately 20 minutes to mature.

In conclusion, there are two ways to tame a llama, you can attempt to mount it until hearts appear, or you can feed it Wheat or Hay Bales to speed up the process. When the Llama’s health hearts appear above your hotbar, that’s how you know you have successfully tamed a llama. You can’t control the direction that the llama travels in, but you can keep them as pets!
Using this guide, we hope you have plenty of fun riding these adorable creatures in your Minecraft world!
