Core Plays
Cole Custer – $9,800 – Starting 2nd
After hosting no races in 2021 due to Covid related reasons, the Nascar circuit returns to the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana California. Auto Club is a 2-mile track that drivers would describe as a “driver’s track” and one of the fastest on the schedule. Since we took 2020, the experience at this track for the Xfinity level is pretty slim. One driver that does have experience here is Cole Custer as he returns to the Xfinity circuit to run this race. One of at least four races Custer will run this year for SS-Green Light Racing. Back in 2018, Custer finishes sixth in this race, while in 2019 Custer started third and took the checkered flag, while leading 29 laps during his victory. Custer during his semi-short career has always seen success at large tracks, while is what we get at the 2-mile here. I am not in love with the starting position here, but I do think Custer has the equipment to hold the front. The issue will be can he get around Allmendinger and get early laps led. If you rather spend up in this spot, Ty Gibbs starting 12th offers us the best chance to win while also getting us some differential, you will just need to pay top dollar.
Anthony Alfredo – $7,300 – Starting 28th
A new year but the same message – value at the Xfinity level is not easy to come by and there are going to be a lot of outlier performances year-round. While this is under the “core plays” section, weekly we are going to need to target a cheap driver to get the exposure to the people we want to. By no means is a core play an “all-in” play if multi-entering, so we need to tread lightly unless we get some absolute out-of-the-park value. Alfredo gets a good price and far back starting position here for a driver with a solid amount of experience and success. Alfredo ran in the Cup Series last year, finishing 30th in rank over 36 races. He ran 19 Xfinity races in 2020, with two top-fives and nine top-tens. Back in 2020, Alfredo ran this race and finished sixth after starting 13th.
