Rocket League Ranks, Divisions, and MMR Explained – TheTealMango

The Rocket League ranks and the ranking system could be very confusing for someone who is new to the game, or who has just started exploring the competitive scenario of the game. We are going to explain that here in the simplest of terms.

From Bronze to Supersonic Legend, you will know everything about the ranks of the action-packed aerial car football title. If you wish to master Rocket League, you must understand how the ranking system works, what are divisions, and what is MMR.

The good thing is understanding all that is none less than having a piece of cake. While other players learn that after exploring the game for a longer period of time, you can learn everything quickly just by going through this easy guide.

What are Competitive Ranks in Rocket League?

Rocket League is a highly intriguing multiplayer game that features teamwork, coordination, accuracy, and driving skills. The game has a very active competitive scene and is one of the top-tier E-sports games. Rocket League has a ranking system that allows you to progress through various ranks across a range of competitive game modes.

There 8 main Ranks called “Tiers” in Rocket League, each Rank has three tiers denoted by Roman Numerals- I, II, and, III, and each Tier is further divided into Divisions. This calculates into 23 Ranks (Tiers) in total including “Unranked.”

Each Rocket League Tier has four Divisions denoted by I, II, III, IV. This is where the confusing part comes into play. However, it is simple to understand with an example. Suppose, if your ranking displays as Gold II Division IV, it means you are on the second Tier of Gold rank and its fourth Division.

If you move up a Division, you’ll reach Gold III Division I, but if you move down one, you’ll reach Gold II Division III. Only the Supersonic Legend rank doesn’t include any Tiers or Divisions.

The Rocket League Ranks start at Bronze I (excluding Unranked), continue to Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Champion, Grand Champion, and Supersonic Legend. Earlier, Grand Champion was the highest rank but the September 2020 update which also made Rocket League free-to-play introduced a new top Tier called Supersonic Legend.

Remember that, each Rocket League Tier also has four Divisions. This way, you will never be confused. You can also remember your Rank using its Symbol.

What is Rocket League MMR?

MMR is an abbreviation for Matchmaking Rank which is a hidden score that decides which rank you are in and against which opponents you’ll be playing. This score helps the system to put you against players having a similar set of skill levels. So, the game stays interesting.

In fact, your Rocket League Rank is only a visual representation of your MMR value in the game. You can track and view your MMR score and skill rating using this website.

You will need to keep increasing your MMR score to reach the next rank. The amount of MMR you earn in every win or loss is decided by the MMR of your opponent. So, facing stronger opponents will help you rank up faster as compared to weaker ones.

There is also a general myth that Goals, Assists, and MVPs affect the MMR you earn in a game. However, it is not true.

Rocket League Playlists for Ranked Matches

Rocket League features a total of eight different playlists for ranked matches that are divided into five groups. You can choose them in whichever order you wish but remember that each playlist will have its own separate progression.

These are the available Playlists for Ranked Matches:

  • Standard: 3v3 matches. The classic game mode, where you’ll find the quickest matchmaking in the game.
  • Doubles: 2v2 matches. The duo game where matchmaking is still easier but you’ll need good coordination to win.
  • Solo Duel: 1v1 matches. The best mode to grind your skills.
  • Solo Standard: 1v1 matches. The Standard mode makes sure that you do not join with friends or members of your club.
  • Extra Modes: This mode features Rumble, Dropshot, Hoops, and Snow Day.

As you keep playing Competitive Matches, you will be promoted to higher Divisions and Tiers. Losing them will demote your Division and Tier.

How to unlock Rocket League Ranked Mode?

To unlock the Ranked Mode in Rocket League and play in Competitive Playlists, you must reach level 10 in the game. To do that, you have to start playing regular modes. This system is in place to make sure that only the players with decent knowledge and skills for the game are able to play competitive matches.

When the Ranked Mode unlocks, you will have to play some Placement Matches. They will determine which rank you should start at. When you start ranking, you will notice a new bar that will display another 10 matches under the name “Season Reward Level.”

After that, you can continue playing to get the highest ranking. Each rank has specific Season Rewards and Titles at the end of the Season. When you will reach Grand Champion I, your MMR will start showing.
