On a windy night, productive hitting made up for defensive miscues.
Team One put on a power display in their 21-17 win over Team Three on Oct. 25 at field 1 in Brahan Spring Park. Their four home runs overcame their six errors. Team One snapped a three-game losing streak in the 55-and-over Rockets league in Huntsville Senior Softball.
William Kelly, Tom Fickling, Kirk Wickizer and Derek Santiago each belted a two-run shot for Team One (2-3). Kelly, who played left center, went 5-for-5 with a double, four runs batted in and five runs scored.
“It was just fun,” he said. “We were resilient tonight. We gave them five outs some innings, six outs some innings. But we still were resilient. We stayed in the fight.”
The retired sergeant first class added his usual refrain, “It’s just a game.”
Wickizer went 5-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs and he pitched the sixth and last inning. Denny Reasner pitched the first five and earned the win.
Fickling was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and five runs. Santiago had three hits and three runs. Bennie Pokemire, player/coach Rick Anthis, Buck Buchanan and Matt Thomas added two hits apiece.
“Tonight we changed up the batting order,” Anthis said. “And everybody just hit the ball really well. We didn’t have as many errors but every player at least got a hit or more.
“The wind helped and the wind hurt, especially on pitching.”
Team Three (3-2) was led by player/coach Chris Maggio and Dave McNeill with three hits apiece. Jerry Bevel, Darnell Ford, Pete Mitchell and Ann Burgess had two hits apiece. Jim “Hitman” Myers took the loss.
“Tough game,” Maggio said. “They outhit us.”
