Minecraft: How to Catch an Axolotl (Complete Guide) – GIVEMESPORT

The Axolotl was one of the new mobs added as part of the Minecraft 1.17 Cliffs & Caves update, but how do you catch and tame one?

Actually finding, catching and taming Axolotl in Minecraft is easier said than done, so we’ve put together a guide to finding the creatures in-game.

Here’s everything you need to know about catching and taming Axolotl in Minecraft.

Where Can I Find Axolotl?

First off, you’ll actually have to find a mob of the creatures. The Axolotl is an aquatic cave animal, so this means they will only spawn in complete darkness (or light level 0).

This also means that there has to be blocks over the top of their habitat, but handily you won’t have to dive that deep to actually find one, as the Axolotl spawn points can be below y: 63, so sea level or lower.

It’s worth noting that between one and four Axolotl will spawn in one group, and they come in different colours. The blue Axolotl are the rarest, as around 1 in 1200 spawn in this colour.

How Can I Tame an Axolotl?

Next up is actually catching and taming the creature, which takes a different approach to taming the likes of a wolf or a cat.

The way to catch and transport an Axolotl is by using a Bucket. After you’ve used this on the creature you can take the Bucket item with you anywhere on the map. You can also lure the creatures using a Bucket of tropical fish.

It’s worth noting that Axolotl will die after spending more than five minutes out of water, so be careful where you drop them!

How Can I Breed Axolotl?

You can get the Axolotl to enter ‘love mode’ if you give them a Bucket of Tropical Fish. Obviously, you’ll need two Axolotl to make a new one (I’m not explaining that bit), and a baby Axolotl takes around 20 minutes to become full grown.

It’s worth noting that this works in Survival Mode, but you can easily spawn an Axolotl in Creative Mode too.

To do this, use a spawn egg, Axolotl Bucket or the Summon command!
