Rocket League – vs. McMurry
Rocket League returned for their NACE varsity season after a solid win against Wayland Baptist last week. This week the Chaps played against Abilene, Texas based McMurry . The Chaps were confident going into the match, focused on sticking to their game plan and not falling back into old habits, which played out winning the first match. LCU was able to get a very quick goal off the kickoff and it snowball into a 4-1 lead and victory in game one. In game two and three, LCU got a bit too comfortable and fell back into some traps that lost them games in the past: getting hyper focused aand not communicating, which has led to an overcommitment to a section of the field and allowing a wide open field for the opponents to use. LCU was able to shake off the back-to-back game losses and bounce back in game four, where they were able to reestablish their field presence and apply the same type of pressure they had in game one. It led to beg wins in the fourth and fifth game, and a 3-2 victory for the Rocket League squad. The victory places them at 2-1 in theNACE Varsity League.
Overwatch – Preseason Match vs. Texas A&M – San Antonio
The Chaps first match (Prior to Rocket League) of the night was against Texas A&M at San Antonio for the PlayVS League. It was a preseason match, so LCU’s priorities were to test out some of the alternate team compositions they’ve been practicing having them ready for the rest of the regular season. The opening control map was Lijiang Tower, a map which is pretty polarizing for our team due to the structure of some of the maps. The game opened on Night Market, easily LCU’s strongest point of the map, due to how strong our most comfortable team composition, Brawl, is on the point. The team executed the team composition well, only losing a single team fight due to disparity in ultimates, but they took the fight off spawn and were able to retake point and secure point one. LCU needed to take one more of the two remaining points to secure a map win, and they were lucky to see the second map be Control Centre, which LCU wanted to see due to their Garden being our weakest of the three points. They took a good initial fight, but due to a good flank from TAMUSA, LCU got forced back and pushed into a choke point where the map took a turn for the worst. The team was then unable to really find their footing and make their way past the tight choke points, leading to a point loss. At this point, the map was tied 1-1 and LCU was on their weakest point of the map, Garden. LCU decided to test a team composition built for Garden specifically, but due to growing pains and it being the first time executing a new strategy on the point, LCU ultimately lost the point and the map overall. This put TAMUSA up 1-0 in the best-of-five series. Second map was an assault map, Volskaya Industries, where TAMUSA had a very strong push onto point one, but the Chaps held point two for an extended amount of time, leaving them confident they’d be able to take the map in a third round if they were able to win in round two. LCU had massive momentum, taking the first point quickly and having ultimate advantage moving into the second point. However, things took a turn for the worst after an incredibly unfortunate teleport led to the entirety of our squad being wiped losing the advantage we had and swinging the game in the favor of TAMUSA. They ended up holding point two for the entirety of the duration leading to a round two loss and the Chaps being down 0-2. Map three ended up being Watchpoint: Gibralter, a map which really takes our squad out of their comfort zone and is not a map we have too much practice on, leading to a quick victory for TAMUSA and resulting in LCU’s 3-0 loss in the series.
