
Maroon got three straight hits to load the bases for cleanup hitter Mark Hoffman in the top of the first inning against green.
Hoffman delivered.
His grand slam set the tone for maroon’s 24-15 win Thursday on field 2 at Brahan Spring Park. They play in the 55-and-over Rockets league in Huntsville Senior Softball.
“Your teammates got to be on base before you can hit them in,” Hoffman said.
The first baseman went 4-for-5 with his grand slam, a double, eight runs batted in and three runs scored. Player/coach Chris Maggio had four hits with a three-run homer for maroon (5-3). Leadoff hitter Bill Santi went 5-for-5 and scored five runs.
Scott Landers, the shortstop, also went 5-for-5. Moto Miller and Dee Benson had three hits apiece. Eddie Johnson, Ron Baer and winning pitcher Jim “Hitman” Myers added two hits apiece.
Myers pitched all six innings. Maroon committed four errors but turned a 6-3 double play.
“Everybody contributed,” Maggio said. “We had good offense, good defense. Everybody contributed.”
Mike Keyser and Tom Fickling had three hits apiece for green (2-6). Scott Piro, Derek Santiago, player/coach Billy Cooley, Terry Koelbl, Ragnar Opiniano and Shawn Gordon had two hits apiece. Crystal Santiago pitched the first three innings and took the loss.
“It was tight until the fourth inning and then our bats fell off,” Cooley said.
