Core Plays

Kyle Busch – DK: $14,500 – Starting 1st

Trigger warning – it is Kyle Busch again. While I hate having to put Busch here as a core play, the data simply is when he is on the track for an Xfinity race, he is also in the optimal lineup. Kyle Busch has run two races so far this year, with one of them being on a road course, and Busch still has the fifth-most laps led.  While Busch does start on the pole today, he very well could absolutely dominate this race and lead a majority of it. Busch has finished in 2nd, 3rd, 1st, and 2nd in his last four races at Nashville and has led at least 10 laps in all of them, but 173 when he last started on the pole and won the race back in June of 2009. Yes, 2009 – so we can throw this data out as a ton has changed, but one thing that hasn’t changed is Kyle Busch’s dominance at the Xfinity level. This week marks NASCAR’s return to Nashville for the first time since 2011, so having any kind of experience here is just an extra nod to Busch. Busch had the fastest practice time this week and also obviously the fastest qualifying time. Busch loves the 54 car, and with him having some (albeit very old) experience here, it is hard for me to see Busch anywhere but the optimal lineup unless there is some form of mechanical issue.

Alex Labbe – DK: $5,400 – Starting 29th

Alex Labbe has run 14 races this year and while he only has one top ten finish, he does have an average finish of 21st. This is a driver who at the beginning of the year was priced around $7,500, so the value has already established itself a lot here. Labbe is also a guy who performs much better on shorter to intermediate tracks, as he has finished 11th at Ohio, 14th at Charolette, 19th at Dover, and 10th at Darlington. Labbe did brush the wall in qualifying which is a small worry, but the 29th starting position really makes Labbe the furthest starting back driver with the best overall points standing on the year. Michael Annet is another guy who will likely be chalky on this slate starting 21st, costing $8,100.
