TUSCALOOSA: The Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority is starting esports leagues for the community. There will be two leagues offered, one for those 17 and younger and one for anyone older than 18.

Registration is open now and ends April 11. Leagues kickoff April 19, and the games chosen for the first tournament are NBA 2K21 and Rocket League.

NBA 2K21 is a one-vs-one basketball game, and Rocket League is a team-based game that’s a combination of soccer and monster trucks.

Both game tournaments will operate virtually with communication via chat app Discord, with five weeks and 10 games followed by a single elimination tournament.

TCPARA Public Relations and Marketing Manager Becky Booker said they are thrilled to be able to offer the community something that is in-demand and available for all.

“I guess it’s just a response to the community,” Booker said. “Games are huge all over the world. Kids play, adults play, grandparents play, so it’s something that will be offered to all skill levels, all ages and something that is really popular in our community and we want to be a leader in that.”

Signups cost $25 through April 11, and $30 between April 12 and April 16. For more information or to sign up, click here.
