Spike Rush in Rocket League, explained simply, was a limited time mode that Rocket League offered to players in 2019 and 2020. Spike Rush debuted as part of the Radical Summer event in 2019, and equipped each player’s car with spikes that would cause the ball to stick to them. Players with the ball couldn’t use their boost, and their cars were easily destroyed by opponents. Players could choose to retract their spikes and release the ball at any time.

In December 2019, it was announced that Rocket League’s Spike Rush mode would return for a limited time later that month. In March of 2020, the event was announced once more, returning players for a third round of mayhem and unique plays. That event lasted April 2 to April 6, 2020.

Spike Rush is a 3-v-3 game mode, keeping in line with Rocket League’s standard form of non-competitive (non-ranked) play.

Although it hasn’t been announced to return yet, it’s likely that we’ll see the game mode at least once more in 2021. Psyonix announced the mode’s return for 2020 on March 30, so perhaps we’ll see an announcement on the same date.

The Radical Summer event of 2019 was an ’80s culture phase of Rocket League, featuring a nine-week-long event with free items, new DLCs, limited-time game modes, and more. The event was split into three celebrations, each lasting three weeks, of the 1980s: Blockbusters, Culture, and Television.

Similar to previous events, players could complete online matches to earn ‘Cassettes’ and redeem them for in-game ’80s-themed items. Radical Summer’s Event Store changed for each phase, bringing in new items for the three-weeks time. Just as they’ve done with events, the “redemption period” gave players a week to redeem Cassettes for any items they missed.
