Psyonix ‘s Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) has announced it’s a sponsorship with Verizon, the first-ever 5G service network.
The sponsorship deal only applies to the developer’s new competitive RLCS X region in North America, which began recently.
“This year we wanted a partner who could keep up to speed with quick and rapid transformations bringing Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) to the storm,” says a Psyonix blog post on the announcement.
“We’re also happy to announce that Verizon is the North American RLCS X’s official 5G partner. They know a little bit about distribution as America’s best-appointed Network so that we’re delighted to have them run the North American RLCS across the year.”
The impact of Verizon is already being felt during the back half of the first Regional RLCS X of North America this weekend, a release that reads “Verizon driven.”
In the 10th esports season, RLCS X marks a dramatic shift in structure replacing the previous format in the league with a more open circuit approach to events. The longer season will last nearly a full year across three seasonal divisions, leading to the next summer RLCS World Championship.
The new model provides them with the versatility they need to adapt to the pandemic (since all matches are online and regionally oriented for now), and offers the additional infrastructure to help emerging teams and broaden the ecosystem, as the Psyonix esports platform experts, Cory Lanier, and Murty Shah, explained to Esports Insider last months.
Verizon has made some big moves in the field of sport in 2020, including a three-year agreement to sponsor and affiliate both FaZe Clan and Dignitas for the Riot Games League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) in June.
