Since it’s initial release in 2015, Rocket League has grown in leaps and bounds. We’ve seen the addition of extra modes, partnerships with classic movie franchises, and ports to current-gen consoles. Based on recent job postings from Psyonix, it looks like it’s coming to mobile too.

Now, this hasn’t been confirmed by officially Psyonix but there’s a lot here that strongly suggests a mobile port is imminent. For starters, Psyonix posted a tweet early last month advertising that they were looking for programmers, managers, and more. After a bit of digging from Gamer’s Digest, details from the job descriptions show that the developer is focusing on candidates with ‘solid knowledge in mobile hardware’.

Not all of the job postings mention previous experience in mobile development however there are a handful that mention it as a requirement for the roles. These specifically include graphics engineers, UI programmers and Dev QA Testers the must be proficient in “Experience working on UI for projects across a variety of platforms (PC, console, mobile, etc.)” as well as “Solid knowledge of: QA methodologies, terminology, and tools; consoles or multiple mobile hardware platforms and configurations; iOS and Android” for the respective roles.

Fans have been asking for a mobile port for a while now but there are already ways to play on the go. The Switch is the obvious go to for portable RL although it does have its drawbacks, it’s not the best system for competitive play, the input put lag can be noticeable to those familiar with other versions and the text is so small only an ant could read it. Other ways include the steam link app but it’s far from optimized. This is fine for now I guess but having a dedicated mobile version could cut out all the fat, making a streamlined experience that allows the fanbase to grow.

Over the past few years, the mobile market has shifted to releasing either condensed versions of Triple-A experiences like Call of Duty: Mobile or full-on ports such as PUBG onto the Android and iOS stores. Since around 2018 the Epic Games have been acquiring developers to increase their reach and with the success of the mobile port of Fortnite, Rocket League on mobile has to be inevitable at this point.

What do you think? Is Rocket League going to hit the Android and iOS Stores soon or does Psyonix have something else up their sleeve? Let us know in the comments!
