I feel like this is detente, at least, of a kind. As GHOST and SHADOW have fought each other in secret and out in the open during Fortnite’s Chapter 2, Season 2, a much stranger battle has been going on in the periphery. It started out a few weeks ago, when a hint on the daily challenge board led us to a massive conflict between Gnomes and Bears, localized in Wailing Woods but stretching out into other corners of the map. It’s led to some other weird secrets, a raid on the Teddy Bear headquarters, and now this: open conflict. It’s up to the player to stop things, so read on for where to disarm the gnomes and the bears.

If you drop onto the map now, you’ll find the bears and gnomes lined up against each other with weapons drawn. The gnomes have a cannon, the bears have a tank. Here’s where you can find them:

To complete the challenge, all you need to do is go up to each faction in turn and interact with their primary weapon. There’s no telling what happens afterwards, but we assume differences are put aside. At least with the gnomes and the bears: I got pickaxed by a supremely annoying default skin while just trying to bring peace to the world.

It seems like this is probably the end of this particular subplot here in Fortnite, though there could always be room for more. I do wish that things were just a tiny bit more signposted: people saw the first challenges on the daily challenge board, but after that you had to go back and check yourself if you wanted to see what was going on, and the game didn’t really indicate that this thing was going to be progressing as much as it has been. Still, it’s been a fun little activity, and more XP is always nice to have.

It reminds me most of The Prisoner’s secret challenges back in the icy season, but those were directly connected to the plot of the main game and came with cosmetic rewards. This one is just a little lagniappe, which is nice too.
