Destiny 2 is getting rid of its paid lootboxes and replacing them with the increasingly popular battle pass system. In an announcement as part of the recent state of the game update, game director Luke Smith told fans that “we want players to know what something costs before they buy it.”
Destiny’s Bright Engrams are being done away with as part of season 10, as Smith says that they don’t live up to that aforementioned principle. They’ll still be available on the free track of the battle pass, but will no longer be purchasable in the Eververse store. Instead, players will get items via a Battle Pass system which Bungie announced last year, or will be able to purchase them directly via the store with either real money or in-game currency.
The move is one that makes a lot of sense, particularly for a game as long-term and varied as Destiny 2. Thanks primarily to the popularity of Fortnite, but also increasing backlash against loot boxes on even a governmental level, battle passes have become increasingly popular across a whole suite of titles.
