Modern Warfare’s still holding the top spot in this week’s Xbox Gameplay Chart; making it the first title of this year and this decade to be in the top spot. Just below, Fortnite continues to lurk at no. 2. Modern Warfare is the only game which has given Fortnite any real consistent trouble, and the two titles have been switching places for the last few weeks. Just below Fortnite, GTA V is still at no. 3 where it’s been comfortably for some time. However, given that it was just added to Xbox Game Pass, this might change next week — it’s possible we could be seeing it move even further up.

Moving down from the top five, and Rocket League and Apex Legends have switched places. We just recently published our Xbox Gameplay Chart of the most played games of 2019, which shows that Rocket League never really wandered from its place in the top ten. Lower down, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has already slipped one place from no. 19 to no. 20 — it’s proof of the bad luck single-player games tend to have on our charts, when even the highly popular behemoth that is the Witcher 3, on Xbox Game Pass no less, can’t keep its place.
Last week, some of the most anticipated titles of 2019 slid down the ranks: Borderlands 3 dropped to no. 23, whilst Gears 5 dropped three places to no. 24. This week, Borderlands 3 has held its place, whilst Gears 5 has managed to rise back up to no. 22. Below, we have our first new entry of 2020: Styx: Shards of Darkness, which comes in to land at no. 32. This title was just added to Games with Gold last week, which most likely explains its sudden debut. BATMAN: The Telltale Series is the other Xbox One title being added to Games with Gold. It’ll be available on January 16th, so perhaps we’ll see some movement if that title manages to join the chart.
Below that, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition and Monster Hunter: World make their re-entrances, at no. 37 and no. 39 respectively. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot going on with the Skyrim Special Edition to explain its sudden re-appearance, although it was added to the Xbox One and Windows Countdown Sales over the holidays as part of a Skyrim and Fallout 3 bundle. Likewise, Monster Hunter: World was half-off at a recent Last Chance sale. Just below Monster Hunter, and hanging on grimly before it drops out of the top 40, is FIFA 19.
Looking ahead, we’ve got some big titles which might shake up the charts some more. Cyberpunk 2077 is now only months away, releasing in April, with Halo Infinite, DOOM Eternal, and Gears Tactics coming this year too. Do you think we’ll see any of these at the top of the chart?
