The 5 worst problems for controller Fortnite players – Fortnite Tracker

If you use a controller to play Fortnite, you will know that there are a heap of unique issues and glitches. Some have been in the game for an incredibly long time, others have cropped up since the more recent updates.

Today we will be looking at 5 of the most infuriating problems that you face when using a controller. It is important to note that these issues apply to both console and PC players who use a controller and is not talking about console specific performance worries.

5. New inventory management feature

This problem emerged following the recent v11.10 patch so you may not have even noticed it yet. In the past, when you opened up your inventory it would hover over the first item in your loadout by default. What it does now is hover over the weapon/item slot that you were using at the time instead.

Without any patch notes it is unclear whether this change was intentional or just a glitch, but most likely it was deliberate and will be staying. Although it may not seem like the biggest nightmare, controller players have developed muscle memory using the old style and it can mess you up in high pressure situations. At first some people thought their controller was broken, personally I thought I was just too tired or freaking out when I kept accidentally swapping the wrong items.

4. Confirm edit on release

This is more of a desired improvement than a problem. The new confirm edit on release option was added at the beginning of Fortnite Chapter 2 and has been a huge topic of discussion since. For the most part, top tier pros seem to agree that it is good to have this turned on if you play on controller.

Firstly, a lot of people, especially controller users, would like to see a confirm reset on release option too. Once you start getting used to editing without pressing the confirm button, it feels a bit odd to make the extra click when resetting. There are of course situations where you may want to reset and then re-edit a piece before confirming, but many players would at least like the option to reset instantly.

There is also a call from some for an option that allows you to confirm an edit on release of the edit bind itself. For some players this would feel more natural and help to achieve quicker edits. It would also allow you to perform fake outs and look away before confirming an edit and surprising your opponent.

3. Picking up downed players

Something else new for Fortnite Chapter 2 is the mechanic that allows you to pick up and carry knocked teammates and enemies. Whilst being a great concept that definitely enhances gameplay, the new feature has caused a big problem for some controller players.

The “pick up” action is automatically bound to the triangle/Y buttons on PlayStation and Xbox respectively. You are unable to change this which consequently means that in box fights and close-range situations, players often accidentally pick someone up when trying to change mode/edit or do whatever they have bound to that button. This can get the player killed and literally ruin the game for a team. With Squads being the mode for the Fortnite Champion Series this season, this is guaranteed to happen in some important matches and could even end up effecting a team’s placement.

2. Traps

By far the longest standing issue on this list for controller players, placing Traps hasn’t worked properly for multiple seasons. It often feels like you a complete gamble as to whether a Trap will actually place, and you just end up hectically spamming your Trap bind in the hope that eventually something will happen.

Even when they do place, they often end up nowhere near the spot you actually wanted them to go. The auto trap feature that builds a surface for you when placing a Trap seems to have been the cause of a lot of these issues.

Some players have found that binding your Trap select and place to the right analogue stick is a solution. This is because the standard Trap bind is also used for other actions like picking up loot and reviving teammates, in some situations this is why your trap won’t select. Realistically though, controller players shouldn’t have to change their set up just to try and help fix a problem with the game, and some sort of fix should be implemented.

1. Unable to cancel edit

Finally, we have another new-ish problem that arose towards the end of Season X. For some reason, once you start making an edit, you can no longer press circle/B to cancel it. You can still escape edit mode by pressing either your confirm bind or pulling out your pickaxe, but again it’s an issue of muscle memory.

This has been a talking point on the r/FortniteCompetitive subreddit for quite a while now, with people in disbelief that it is still happening.

As a result of this issue, players regularly find themselves dying with their edit pencil out. It is incredibly annoying and seems so unnecessary. Epic Games have made no comment on the problem, so we don’t know whether it is a glitch or a deliberate change, but it needs to be resolved.
