There’s a new Rift Zone here in Fortnite, just like there’s been every week in Season 10 so far. This new one is called Starry Suburbs, and it plays into the time travel theme we’ve seen throughout some other parts of the season: it’s the ruined suburb by Pleasant Park, apparently returned to its former splendor. The mechanic in this one is that there are shooting stars falling from the sky full of loot for the taking, including, most interestingly, what Epic refers to as as a "never-before-seen" weapon. We’re all ears for something like that, naturally. Time to head to Starry Suburbs.
This is Fortnite, so everything that winds up in the game gets datamined fairly quickly, making this idea of a never-before-seen weapon even more interesting. Unfortunately, "never-before-seen" seems like it might be a bit of a stretch in these circumstances. It’s the gold variation on the tactical SMG, which, to be fair, we have not seen before. But we have seen the Tactical SMG before, and this is a gem that regularly introduces things like the exploding Batarang and junk rift, which are much further afield than this. It’s a problem that Fortnite has: meeting high expectations on such a regular basis can be tough.
That doesn’t mean a gold Tactical SMG is a small deal, of course. SMGs are fairly strong weapons, and the ability to up your SMG game will be well-appreciated by all sorts of players. It reminds me a little of when the compact SMG was destroying the meta by tearing through player-built structures faster than they could be built, though I doubt we’ll run into that kind of problem overall.
We’re coming now to the end of Season X, and I’m assuming most players can’t wait to get there soon enough. It’s been an odd one, but I’m looking forward to whatever happens next. It seems like we’re going to get a new map, and if you combine that with skill-based matchmaking and a more friendly low-skill experience you get a game that could be poised to draw back old players and keep them around with some smart new additions. We’ll see soon.
